Just a year ago, Ms. Brannigan, 24, who holds up Case No. 24 as one of the models on the NBC game show “Deal or No Deal,” had been full of hope when she and her fiancé had each other’s names tattooed across their inner wrists.

But now, when she looks at the letters — P-A-T-R-I-C-K — she is reminded of the failed relationship.

For help, she turned to Dr. Tattoff, a chain of tattoo removal stores where nurses use lasers in a series of treatments to break down tattoo pigments. Dr. Tattoff is part of a growing industry catering to people who may not have thought about the implications of “forever” the first time around.

Which is surprising, considering some of the grotesque illustrations that walk through the doors of the West Ventura Urgent Care Center every month to take advantage of the Boys & Girls Club’s Tattoo Removal Program. Demonic skulls, spiders, naked women, various gang insignia, swastikas and neo-Nazi lightning bolts, etched everywhere from between the fingers to the back of the head, are frequent sights. But when Troll sees that tiny, triangular formation, signifying mi vida loca (“my crazy life”) in the visual language of Latino street gangs, she insists it come off first.

My Tattoo Removal Story: One woman’s journey to becoming tattoo-free

A few months ago, one slightly intoxicated night, I apparently consented (and even paid!) to have a tattoo jackhammered into my upper arm. I [heart] Cass. The tattoo guy dug out a nice bright red heart. How cute!) What an unpredictable turn of events that scarcely two weeks later, Cassidy decided his love for me was mostly out of appreciation that I introduced him to my now ex-best friend. How cute!

Even before Cass upgraded to a more upscale model, I felt embarrassed and awkward for those two weeks, about declaring my love for him on my arm. But once we were over, embarrassment turned to humiliation. I clearly had to lose my tattoo.
